Women rule, OK?
I RECENTLY read an article in a back issue of your magazine titled “The
Game of Life” by Deborah Hutton – and loved it!
Six years ago my partner-in-crime, Ange, and I started up our own
women’s social golf club – Lilydale Ladies Golf Association (LLGA).
After spending years at end-of-year golf shindigs with our men, bored
out of our minds and not really knowing any other women, we both decided
that enough was enough! So I stood up at the end of the speeches and said to
the ladies present in the room, “Who wants to play golf?”
I immediately signed up 14 women, all enthusiastic and, like me, a little
bit scared. You see, golf had always been a bit of a male domain and these
ladies were keen to get out on a course and strut their stuff. But not knowing
the etiquette, r ules and required skills, they were a little hesitant to get into
it. LLGA was the perfect environment for all the WAGs to have a go.
Women are busy people so we decided that our games would match the
golf fixture the men follow but we would play at different courses.
Being a social group, we play 13 times a year at different courses and as
we only play nine holes, we tend to fill the gap at most courses in a timeslot
about 8.30am when the male social groups have all teed off, and before
members of the club commence their rounds about 11am.
We don’t have a membership structure because a pay-to-play setup seems
to suit us better. Our oldest member is 85 – she took up the game five years
ago when her husband died – while our youngest ladies are 26. Two of our
girls have had babies in the past couple of years but are enjoying their time
on the course.
The beauty of this social environment is everyone gets to learn at their own
pace. The older members of the club always help the newbies in their groups.
We have nearest-the-pin and longest-drive awards and, of course, the loser on
the day gets to wear a pink “NAGA” apron during their next round.
We are all hooked and the husbands and boyfriends of all our members
are sick of their WAGs constantly saying, “Do you want a game of golf?”
LLGA is the only social group of women to play on a Sunday in Victoria
that we know of. We developed our own logo (based on the Toronto Ladies
logo in Canada). Male players that see us on Sundays are fascinated, so
much so that they like to stand around and watch us tee off (we always send
out our big hitters first so we can watch a few mouths drop). Six years later
we now have 35 members and play some of the most beautiful courses in the
country and we always try to support the clubs we visit by having lunch and
All of us have become fabulous friends and we now hold an annual
partners day and host a trip away every year.
Our dream is to push our way into playing a few warm-up holes for the
crowd at the next Australian Open! We want to spread the message that
we love our golf and that taking up the game has been a truly wonderful
experience for every one of us.
